Helenite is also called Gaia Stone or Goddess stone. It is made from Mount St. Helen's volcanic rock dust, which when melted, forms green glass that is similar to obsidian. Helenite was first discovered accidentally after the Mount St. Helen's eruption in 1980. Welders were doing salvage work using acetylene torches and they noticed that the intense heat was melting the volcanic ash and turning it into green glass. The silica, aluminum, iron, and chromium present in the rocks and ash is what causes the green color. The name Helenite is used to describe any glass or crystal made from the ash. There are other colors of Helenite but they have been treated in some way to change the natural color.
