Pure obsidian is usually dark in appearance, though the color varies depending on the presence of impurities. It has the property of showing a different appearance according to how it is cut. When cut in one direction it is a beautiful jet black; when cut across another direction it is glistening gray.

Obsidian can be found in Canada, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Kenya, the U.S., and other areas with volcanic activity.

In ancient times it was often used to make cutting tools, and as such, Obsidian can have a forceful cutting reality. The blackness of this stone enhances the ability to reach your inner self. It is one of the earliest known stones to be used for scrying.

Obsidian can guard against negative energy and helps with grounding of emotions. It lessons feelings of doubt and suspicion and aids in the mental healing process. It allows you to let go of old grudges and misunderstandings between loved ones.

In Victorian times black jewelry was often used to indicate a period of mourning, but modern meanings can vary. Black glass objects are often used as divination tools. The color black absorbs negative energy and can be used as protection from external influences. In the psychology of color, black can represent power and independence.

A Scrying glass is used to see things psychically, to obtain spiritual visions and messages, and also for purposes of divination or fortune-telling. It is often used as a means of divining the past, present, or future. Scrying is actively used by many cultures and belief systems and is not limited to one tradition or ideology.
