Dragon's Breath Opal Vintage Pendant Necklace
I used a vintage dragon's breath opal glass stone and set it inside a silver lace setting, and attached it to a silver plated bezel. I then added an antiqued silver dragon charm. This comes with a 24 inch silver filled chain. The flashes inside the opal make it look like dragon's breath.
Dragon's breath opal is a glass stone that was first made in Bohemia in the early 1900's. It was made to resemble a Mexican fire opal and was often called by that name. Dragon's breath opals were made by adding metals to the molten glass to create the opal flash effect. The overall color of the glass is reddish orange to coral rose, with flashes of blue and purple inside the glass, depending on the angle it is viewed from. This blue and purple breath of fire is what gives the stone its name.
The dragon has been linked to humanity for more than 5,000 years. In many cultures dragons represent the primal forces in nature. They are seen as mystical and celestial beings. In Eastern traditions dragons often symbolize wisdom, strength, and good luck. In Europe, dragons were often considered malevolent, but they were thought to possess some form of magic or supernatural power.
The dragon's eye is a well known symbol of protection, ensuring that whoever wears it will be under the dragon's gaze. The dragon's eye stands for the balance of love, power and wisdom. It can give insight into the unknown and see things that are hidden. The claw represents the dragon's uncanny ability to smell trouble and to root out liars and thieves.
