Vintage Green Opaline UV Vaseline Glass Horn Pendant Necklace

  • $ 3000

I wrapped a vintage green opaline vaseline glass horn pendant with 925 sterling silver wire. This comes with a 24 inch silver filled chain. The glass glows green under ultraviolet light. It is approximately 1.5 inches long.

These opaline uranium glass horns are made from 19th century glass canes that were discovered over a decade ago. The studio art glass is skillfully handcrafted by lampwork glass crafters using old world traditional expertise. The unique glass type is constructed from a rare formula that can never be made again.

The little horn or cornicello is an Italian amulet worn to protect against the evil eye. It is a symbol that originally resembled the twisted horn of an African eland and was said to bring good fortune. In ancient times it was most likely sacred to the moon goddess.

Vaseline glass is often called by many different names including canary glass depression glass, custard glass, and uranium glass. Trace amounts of uranium dioxide are added to silicate crystals during the melting process to create the bright green or yellow color. It also glows a fluorescent green under black light. However, it is not radioactive and does not contain enough uranium to be harmful.

Uranium glass was popular from the 1880's to the 1930's. It was sold as tableware, jewelry beads, and other types of collectables, but production was discontinued when the availability of uranium was sharply curtailed during the Cold War. Most examples of vaseline glass date from that time period.
