Vintage Vaseline Glass Sphere Black Light Glow Pendant Necklace

  • $ 3500

I wrapped a vintage custard glass sphere with silver aluminum wire and added a 24 inch silver filled chain. The sphere has bubble inclusions and glows green under ultraviolet light. There are some surface imperfections from the casting process, as well as some small nicks, but they do not detract from the overall appearance. It is approximately 1 inch in diameter.

Custard glass is often called by many different names including canary depression glass, vaseline, and uranium glass. Trace amounts of uranium dioxide are added to silicate crystals during the melting process to create the bright lemon yellow color. It also glows a fluorescent green under black light. However, it is not radioactive and does not contain enough uranium to be harmful.

Uranium glass was popular from the 1880's to the 1930's. It was sold as tableware and other types of collectables, but production was discontinued when the availability of uranium was sharply curtailed during the Cold War. Most examples of custard glass date from that time period. Custard glass is often called by many different names including canary, depression glass, vaseline, and uranium glass.
